Abstract

Midwives face many challenges in their practice, not only due to workload pressures and the changing profiles of pregnant women with complex needs but from a wide range of sources. Midwives are bound by strict rules and regulations through the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and may be challenged by consumers, employers and even in the rare event of an unexpected or unexplained death, from coroners and the police. This paper will focus on the sphere of midwifery practice, the normal and abnormal and the grey areas between, with the aim of supporting midwives to explore opportunities and solutions to problems if they should find themselves under investigation.
