In April, Alba Diz-Muñoz joined the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) cell biology and biophysics unit as a research group leader. The role will enable Diz-Muñoz to continue her research into mechanical properties that affect cell behaviour, particularly the crosstalk between membrane tension and cell signalling for polarity and motility. As part of these efforts, Diz-Muñoz and her collaborators aim to develop new tools and techniques for measuring and manipulating physical forces, laying the groundwork for advances in the understanding of how such factors modulate cellular behaviour.

Here Diz-Muñoz, who previously worked at UCSF and UC Berkeley, discusses her motivations for joining EMBL, what life is like at the laboratory, and how the organization supports cuttingedge research.
