Abstract

ADP-ribose was shown to inhibit mechanical activity of the isolated rat heart and to decrease the duration of action potentials in preparations of isolated atria. These effects did not depend on ADP-ribose metabolites and were mediated by A1 adenosine receptors. ADP-ribose induced a positive chronotropic effect in the isolated heart with suppressed A1 receptors. It is thought that this effect is caused by the activation of A2 adenosine receptors induced by ADP-ribose.
