A review of the literature indicates that the phenomenon of overt homosexual incest is a rarity. Much has been written about homosexuality and incest as separate subjects, but the combination of homosexual incest has not been adequately dealt with as an entity. This paper reports a case of overt multigenerational, homosexual incest involving three generations of an intelligent professional family. In addition to the presentation of descriptive historical material, the case is discussed from the viewpoints of intrapsychic conflict and family interaction. The patterns of possible sources of pathological sexual identification are traced, and the meaning of the symptom of homosexual incest for the various family members is discussed. Latent themes of feared but desired heterosexual incest enter into the dynamics of the case. The violation of the cultural taboos of homosexuality and incest were found to be only a part of the distortion of intrafamily roles and boundries in this dysfunctional family in which at least one member became psychotic. The role of the key family “secrets” and the silent collusion of the women in this family were noted as evidence of some of the additional pathological family distortion in communication and interaction.
