Abstract

Carole Dinshaw qualified as an RMN in Birmingham in 1982 and began an RGN course the following year. Her first ward manager post came in 1987, on a mental health assessment unit for older people. Since then, she has worked as a community psychiatric nurse, a clinical nurse specialist, a nurse manager, a practice development adviser and, since 2002, as a consultant nurse. She completed an MA in 1995 in social gerontology and, two years ago, began a part-time PhD at the school of psychology, University of Birmingham.
