People with severe mental illness have poorer physical health, and are more vulnerable to the consequences of poor physical health, than the general population. This population also tends to die 15–25 years earlier; improving their physical health is high on the agenda - as shown by a report published in 2016 by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. However, mental healthcare providers face unique challenges in trying to achieve this. This article describes the latest policy recommendations, the challenges linked to their implementation, and how a London mental health trust is improving the physical health of its patients.
