ABSTRACT

A restructuring of staffing for a 30-bed orthopedic unit is described. A team nursing approach was initiated after careful delineation of the roles of the various nursing personnel. Specific training of non-RNs expanded their skill base and versatility. Productivity of non-licensed staff increased markedly and RN focus shifted from task completion to managing and directing care.
