Abstract

Executive SummaryThe March/April 2003 issue of Nursing ECONOMICS featured an interview with Sister Mary Jean Ryan describing the mission of SSM Health Care and its long-term commitment to continuous quality improvement. This commitment to quality laid the foundation for SSM Health Care being awarded the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for the entire health care system and American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition for 1 of their 21 hospitals in 2002.Part II of this article features an interview with Joan Beglinger, MSN, MBA, RN, FACHE, the vice-president of patient services at St. Marys Hospital, Madison, WI, the SSM Health Care hospital that received ANCC Magnet Recognition. While the philosophies of Magnet and Baldrige overlap, the challenges that they create for staff and management are quite different.Ms. Beglinger describes the challenges of the Magnet preparation process, including the efforts to align key constituencies like the medical staff and non-nursing departments.
