Abstract

Executive SummaryIn the wake of the IOM report, To Err is Human, numerous organizations have stepped forward to define practices and imperatives to improve patient safety and outcomes.Clearly, the role of nursing is integral to providing safe care, so nursing organizations should be integral to the efforts of defining safer environments. The Leapfrog Group has defined several evidence-based initiatives for dramatically improving outcomes including the implementation of computerized physician order entry (CPOE), evidence-based hospital referral (EHR), and intensive care unit physician staffing (IPS).Recent data reveal that fewer than 15% of hospitals have implemented CPOE, but 50% more have plans to implement it in the next 2 to 3 years.By 2002, 70% of Americans had access to information about safety for hospitals in their vicinity. The positive and negative implications of these initiatives for nursing practice have yet to be understood.
