Executive SummaryThe Institute of Medicine report “Transforming the Work Environment of Nurses” maintains that health care organizations need to fundamentally change how work is designed, how personnel are deployed, and how the organizational culture understands and acts on patient safety science.Port Huron Hospital, Port Huron, Michigan sought to optimize the available staff and developed the “Nurse-On-Wheels” (NOW) program.The program has three goals: (a) to enable RNs to be relieved of some tasks that are not related to direct patient care; (b) to improve communication between disciplines shift to shift; and (c) to reduce the potential for medication error.
