Abstract

Executive Summary▸ Like most hospital decisions today, data-driven analysis is utilized to find the staff, products, and services that will deliver the best outcome -nursing education is no exception.▸ Through an analysis of patient discharge data including DRG, ICD-9, and length of stay data, one institution gained insight into characteristics of their patient population that ultimately drove their educational agenda.▸ Their analysis revealed a surprising concentration of respiratory diagnoses accounting for their three most common reasons for pediatric admission: asthma, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia.▸ Focusing on nursing-sensitive outcomes, the 2-hour education program reviewed pediatric respiratory anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology in addition to assessment, treatment, and key infection control measures.▸ The focus on respiratory care competency drove other changes in clinical policy and practices related to medication administration and infection control that ultimately led to a reduction in nosocomial RSV infections.
