Abstract

Executive Summary▸ The urgency for nurse succession planning has been described as a universal need.▸ Perioperative nurse leaders have concerns about the leadership pipeline both inside their organizations, and in the larger perioperative community.▸ Both perioperative nurse leaders and staff working in this area are older than nurses in other specialty areas.▸ More than half of perioperative leaders in this study reported difficulty recruiting staff, and even more anticipate problems within the next 5 years.▸ The results of this study are a call to action for nurse leaders, educators, and health care executives.▸ The failure to have an adequate pipeline of younger perioperative nurses could come at a high cost to organizations.
