Abstract

Normal venous flow depends on the smooth lining and extensibility of the vein, competency of the valves that prevent the backflow of blood, and the pumping action of the muscles along the vein.Thrombophlebitis, however, which is inflammation of the vein and formation of a thrombus, disrupts normal venous flow and may lead to a life-threatening embolus. This month's Clinical Insights explains the physiology of thrombophlebitis and tells you what to look for.
