Abstract

RESPECTING A PATIENT'S RELIGIOUS NEEDS IS KEY TO HOLISTIC CARE

The new arrival on the ward was in his nineties and was not expected to live for much longer. I read through his notes and saw that the section called ‘religious or spiritual needs’ had been left blank, as is often the case. I thought no more of it until late in my shift when the hospital chaplain arrived and sat with the patient, reading aloud from the bible.
