Abstract

The emerging emphasis on phytochemicals, the naturally occurring components of foods such as non-nutritive carotenoids, bioflavonoids or allicin that are not normally recognized as nutrients or as overt toxins, poses a challenge to the Food and Drug Administration charged with assuring the safety of our food supply. This article reviews the various options open to the regulatory agency.
