The high incidence of recurrences and reoperations after traditional vaginal pelvic organ prolapse (POP) surgery contributed to the development of the transvaginal mesh (TVM) approach. As an alternative to the traditional abdominal approach, TVM presumably would provide less invasive techniques, with shorter operating times and hospital stays, as well as less recurrence and reoperations than traditional vaginal repairs.
