Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) screening has shown high sensitivities and specificities for trisomy 21 and other common aneuploidies, thereby leading to a consideration for its use as a primary screening test. However, it has limitations, including the limited range of targeted aneuploidies and the failure to always provide a result.
