This review article addresses issues associated with the care of women in families with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome who have not had cancer themselves. Issues addressed include optimal risk assessment for breast and ovarian cancers, the effectiveness of risk-reducing surgery, side effects of the procedures and alternative strategies for cancer prevention as well as the best ways to help with the decision-making process.
