Abstract

(Abstracted from Am J Obstet Gynecol 2018;218:523.e1–523.e12)

Intrapartum electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) is the most commonly used tool in obstetrics in the United States, used ubiquitously in US hospitals to monitor the fetal heart rate during labor. However, clear categorization of EFM patterns that predict acidemia remains unclear, and there is a lack of evidence supporting EFM's ability to reduce neonatal morbidity and mortality.
