Abstract

Displays of motionless vertical lines sometimes produce an impression of vibration. The relative strength of this impression was explored for 40 Ss, using a paired-comparison procedure, for displays of black lines subtending visual angles from 2 to 20′ of arc and having black to white area ratios of 1:1.5 and 1:3. The maximum impression of vibration was found for lines between 3′ and 10′ with 1:1.5 spacing.
