Unidimensional scales of intensity of defeat were constructed for terms taken from baseball headlines. One scale was constructed for difference between winning and losing scores and another for magnitude of the winning score. The scales were constructed by averaging scores associated with the different terms in baseball headlines. Three clusters resulted in both scales, one around words meaning small winning margin and small winning score (exemplified by edge, shade), one around medium winning margins and scores (exemplified by win, beat), and one around large winning margins and large scores (exemplified by rout, wallop).
