Abstract

Many pharmaceutical companies have poured millions of dollars into developing disease management (DM) services, seeing this as a new line of business with huge revenue-earning potential. However, for the most part, these endeavours have not been very successful. Nevertheless, the pharmaceutical industry has a highly valuable role to play in DM, according to Dr David Bernard, director of the Health and Disease Management programme at the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS), US. Speaking at the third annual Disease Management Congress [Pasadena, California, US; February 1999], Dr Bernard shared his vision of a collaborative DM role for pharmaceutical companies, and related the experience of UPHS in working with pharmaceutical companies.
