Abstract

Key to the success of any service is the quality management system and the international standard ISO 22870 "Point-of-care testing (POCT)-requirements for quality and competence" represents the gold standard for any organization wishing to undertake a POCT service. A POCT service should be organizational led but managed by the laboratory. There should be agreed governance, with adequate resource provision and infrastructure to manage and provide the service. Appropriate training should be available for both trainer and end user. Full connectivity offers a solution to improving information access, facilitating decision making, facilitating a safe quality culture, and ease of compliance with the ISO standards.
