Abstract

Point-of-care testing (POCT) is the fastest growing area in the In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) industry, and it is therefore no surprise that POCT is now recognized as a distinct domain. A comprehensive POCT program should include the following essential elements: (i) regulatory matters; (ii) ethics, governance, and responsibilities; (iii) training, competency, and staff development (continuous professional development, CPD); (iv) equipment and method evaluation; (v) information management; and (vi) quality management. Each of these elements is discussed briefly, and a proposed structure to manage POCT at Tawam Hospital and its affiliated satellite centers are presented. Point-of-care testing is in its infancy at Tawam but rapidly evolving.
