Re-visioning K-12 Education: Learning Through Failure—Not Social Promotion

Social promotion and no fail policies are a growing trend in education. This position article describes this trend and grounded in neuroscience and the learning sciences describe how this trend is contributing to the decreased production in scientists. Finding a solution to this trend is critical, and we offer evidence of how emerging technologies such as video games counter the no fail issue through instruction design. Finally, we offer recommendation to the science education community as to how to embark on a new goal of change.
