Abstract

Education is a prerequisite to employment for most people in our society. However, people with psychiatric disabilities, at both the secondary and post- secondary level, often do not have equal access to education. The problems occur as a result of misconceptions about their roles and abilities. Providers in mental health services, vocational rehabilitation services and education often do not see their clients/students as suitable for continuing education and meaningful work. However, recent studies indicate that persons with psychiatric disabilities do benefit from education and that education may increase their employability.
