UK national policy mandates an increasingly patient centred NHS. A patient centred approach should include mental health service users, whether they are seen in specialist mental health services, in primary care or other health services. The Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board mandates service user involvement in the planning, delivery and evaluation of training. The author reports on the successful long-term development of extensive engagement of mental health service users in postgraduate psychiatric training. It is argued that there is need to extend such developments to primary care education; knowledge of experience from mental health may assist in planning such developments.
