Abstract

The theoretical and practical underpinnings of fees charged by mental health service providers are discussed in terms of historical and ethical contexts along with a selective review of published research. Key concepts are explained in the context of how they influence fee setting, discussion of fees with clients, fee disputes, and the influence of third-party payers. Practical considerations for dealing with these issues in the evolving health care system are discussed and recommendations for practice are presented.
