Abstract

Describes an innovative course to teach graduate students in clinical psychology the fundamental concepts of psychotherapy before they actually see patients. Although didactic, it is designed so that the basic principles of psychotherapy come to life through carefully selected and edited audio- and videotapes and verbatim transcripts that illustrate typical errors made by beginning therapists at each critical stage of the therapy process. These errors are then corrected by means of role-playing and discussion groups. Students who have taken this course seem to be far better prepared for their practice and internships than students who have not had this experience.
