Abstract

Psychiatry's emerging new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) extends current psychiatric thinking by encompassing scores of new behavioral disturbances within the “medical model” and by defining mental disorders circumstantially in terms of psychiatric practice. A conception of behavioral disturbance as a sociobehavioral phenomenon is presented. (21 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
