Abstract

This article is a call to action for psychologists to implement the American Psychological Association’s “Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming People” (APA, 2015) and transform psychological practice so that psychologists—and the settings in which they work—are affirming of transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people. The authors define TGNC-affirming-psychological practice, and discuss important training goals to develop a next generation of psychologists who are culturally responsive and supportive of TGNC clients. This article concludes the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity journal’s special issue, Trans-Affirming Psychological Practice, and reflects on how the ideas across the special issue articles can push the field forward in knowledge of TGNC-affirming psychological practice.
