Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1978, Vol 23(10), 742–743. Reviews the book, Piaget, Psychology and Education: Papers in Honour of Jean Piaget edited by Ved P. Varma and Phillip Williams (1976). This collection of articles was arranged to honor Piaget on the occasion of his 80th birthday. It includes a biographical sketch by Eric Lunzer and a series of “essays” and research reviews in three broadly denned areas, theoretical issues (four contributions), special cognitive content domains (five contributions), and six papers dealing with educational applications. As is frequently true of sets of “invited” papers, the quality and breadth of coverage vary considerably and, unfortunately, the amount of editorial commentary and organization is noticeably minimal. Lunzer's “appreciation” of Piaget's work is a well-written overview that provides a balanced perspective on Piaget's major contributions and, most importantly, stresses the modifications and revisions which continue to mark the Genevan system.
