Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1978, Vol 23(10), 761–762. Reviews the book, The Developing Individual in a Changing World, Vol. 2: Social and Environmental Issues edited by Klaus F. Riegel and John A. Meacham (see record 1977-26516-000). Contributors to the volume have approached the topic in several ways. The keynote paper is an essay by Willis Overton entitled “Environmental Ontogeny,” Overton suggested the application of a structuralist model to environmental as well as organismic development. Other papers examine historical change in human societies. David Runyon, reviewing the history of playgrounds in the last 100 years, identified changes in these deliberately constructed environments that presumably correspond to alterations in our theoretical views of the child and of recreation.
