Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1978, Vol 23(10), 780. Reviews the book, Alcohol and alcoholism by Keith J. B. Rix (1977). This is a brief, well-balanced review of the recent literature on alcohol and alcoholism. The book begins with an introduction to the metabolism of ethanol and the acute effects of ethanol on various physiological functions. In a separate chapter, acute effects of ethanol on the nervous system are reviewed. The final three chapters in the book cover the problem of diagnosis and treatment of alcoholism and community approaches to dealing with the problem of alcoholism.
