Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1978, Vol 23(10), 783. Reviews the book, Mental retardation: A developmental approach by Charles Carr Cleland (1978). This book is divided into three parts. The first stresses developmental ages from prenatal to old age and discusses problems of retardation in these various' developmental stages. The second deals with the institution and community and how adjustment occurs in these settings Clinical “types” are included in this section. The final part is “Reflections on Progress in Mental Retardation” which attempts an “overview of past efforts in this field as well as conjectures about needs and what the future may hold.
