Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1978, Vol 23(11), 844–846. Reviews the books, Wörterbuch der Psychiatrie und der medizinischen Psychologie. 2nd ed. rev. and enlarged by Uwe Henrik Peters (1977); International Encyclopedia of Psychiatry, Psychology, Psychoanalysis, and Neurology edited by Benjamin B. Wolman (1977); and Wörterbuch der Lerntheorien und der Verhaltenstherapie (Dictionary of Learning Theories and Behavior Therapy) by Hans Zeier (1976). Peter's dictionary is the fruit of a creative response to the frustration he experienced as a young man in struggling with the large and frequently confusing psychiatric terminology. Zeier's primary interest is to make intelligible the German and the English terminology of behavior therapy. Learning theories, with emphasis on the Skinnerian approach to experimental analysis and control of behavior, are presented as a foundation of recent endeavors to modify maladaptive behavior, may it vary only slightly or markedly from the socially accepted norms. Wolman's book discusses psychiatry, psychology, psychoanalysis, and neurology. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
