Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1978, Vol 23(11), 916–918. Reviews the book, Alcoholism Problems in Women and Children edited by Milton Greenblatt and Marc A. Schuckit (1976). In this book, the editors make a general contribution to the field of alcohol research. The book will serve as a reminder to some, but as an eye-opener to many others, that women and children, too, can have problems with alcohol, that such problems are apparently on the increase; and, most importantly, that these problems may be related to psychological and physiological states that are unique to women or children. This kind of focus is a valuable addition to the previous preoccupation with male social drinking, male alcoholism, and male-oriented hypotheses regarding the genesis and function of drinking behavior.
