Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1978, Vol 23(11), 924–925. Reviews the book, The Analysis of Survey Data, Vol. 1: Exploring Data Structures edited by Colm A. O'Muircheartaigh and Clive Payne (1977). The editors of this volume sought to produce a book that would be a practical and up-to-date guide to the processing and analysis of survey data for survey practitioners and students. They have succeeded in producing a compact nontechnical overview of a set of procedures that would be of interest to the nonsurvey analyst. This volume is the first of two volumes of The Analysis of Survey Data, covering six “exploratory” techniques: the chapters in the present book cover the mechanics of computer processing, cluster analysis, principal components and factor analysis, latent structure models, multidimensional scaling, construction of attitude scale and coefficient alpha, and the “automatic interaction detector” and related techniques.
