Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1978, Vol 23(11), 930–931. Reviews the book, Renewal in Psychiatry: A Critical Rational Perspective edited by Theo C. Manschreck and Arthur M. Kleinman (see record 1978-32074-000). This book is an impassioned call for a re-examination of psychiatry It is essentially a collection of 11 essays on widely divergent topics within the broad domain encompassed by the science and practice of psychiatry. This is not an easy book to review, as each of the 11 essays are free standing except for their shared commitment to “critical rationality.” Its varied contents encompass sociocultural aspects of psychiatry, psychosomatic approaches to childhood disorders, psychohistory, middle homes, and a follow-up of civil rights workers.
