Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1978, Vol 23(11), 941–942. Reviews the book, Playfulness: Its Relationship to Imagination and Creativity by J. Nina Lieberman (1977). The author intends to show that playfulness is a central, common catalyst for play, imagination, and creativity. From her own work with kindergarten children, she provides some statistically significant but quite modest positive associations between teacher rated playfulness and the children's verbal fluency and originality scores. The review of other studies also fails to establish persuasively the value of playfulness, as conceived by Lieberman, in understanding imagination and creativity.
