Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1978, Vol 23(11), 958. Reviews the book, Introductory Statistics. 3rd ed by Thomas H. Wonnacott and Ronald J. Wonnacott (1977). The objective of the authors is to cover most of the material in mathematical statistics books, using mathematics only slightly more difficult than that used in a typical elementary statistics text. The sequence of chapters is rather characteristic of some statistics books, and the book seems to meet the objective of the authors well. Students seeking clarification of statistical ideas without an undue emphasis on mathematical derivation and proofs in the body of a book probably will like the text. The authors have indicated in a personal communication that the book is used in a statistics course within the mathematics department at their institution. It should be quite successful in that context. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
