Reviews the book, Self-starvation: From individual to family therapy in the treatment of anorexia nervosa by Mara Selvini Palazzoli and Arnold Pomerans (1978). The present edition is based on the author's extensive study and treatment of cases of anorexia nervosa. The first sections of the book present a historical overview of the recognition and differential diagnosis of the syndrome and describe its general characteristics Two therapeutic approaches are then considered. The sheer extent of the author's work on anorexia nervosa–both in terms of years of experience and number of clients-makes this book worthwhile reading for those interested in the syndrome.
