Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1978, Vol 23(11), 973–974. Reviews the book, Psychosomatic disorders in childhood by Melitta Sperling and Otto E. Sperling (1978). In this book, a variety of childhood psychosomatic disorders is considered (e.g., ulcerative colitis, bronchial asthma, migraine, skin disorders) from within a classically psychoanalytic perspective. Case histories are used to document the author's primary thesis that “the psychosomatic type of object relationship is one of the pathological vicissitudes of the child's symbiotic relationship with his mother.” (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
