Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1978, Vol 23(12), 999–1001. Reviews the book, Problem Solving: A Structural/Process Approach with Instructional Implications by Joseph M. Scandura (1977). This book is an analysis of higher-order cognitive processes. Scandura's global objective is a synthesis of three perspectives–those of the content analyst, the cognitive psychologist, and the assessment theorist. Thus, he wears all three hats in judging the adequacy of a theory. He seeks theories of idealized competence, cognition, and individual knowledge that are mutually compatible.
