Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1978, Vol 23(12), 1025. Norma Haan responds to Robert R. Holt's reply (see record 2006-06387-095) to Hann's response (see record 2006-06387-094) to Holt's review (see record 2006-06392-007) of Haan's book, Coping and Defending: Processes of Self-Environment Organization (1977). Haan says that she appreciates Professor Holt's frank statement concerning his difficulties in dealing with the structuralist ideas used in the book. Attempts to integrate concepts from two classical, seemingly antagonistic theories must inevitably violate deeply held, unexamined assumptions we all grew up with. The reliability issue is basically whether ego processes are so without social reality that no attempt should be made to investigate them.
