Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(1), 49–50. Reviews the book, Sexual Assault of Children and Adolescents by Ann Wolbcrt Burgess, A. Nicholas Groth, Lynda Lytle Holmstrom, and Suzanne M. Sgroi (1978). The authors provide an excellent handbook defining the varying effects of sexual abuse on children and adolescents. Although devoid of experimental methodology, it is rich in case histories. This work represents the first comprehensive text that focuses entirely on child and adolescent sexual assault victims and offenders, and their families, and meets a long-standing need. This text should serve as a springboard to clinical researchers to evaluate the impact over time that sexual assault has on this age group.
