Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(1), 62–63. Reviews the book, Foundations of Inference in Survey Sampling by Claes-Magnus Cassel, Carl-Erik Sarndal, and Jan Hakan Wretman (1977). This book is unique in that it attempts to cover very recent researches in the “foundations of survey sampling.” This area has only recently been developed and many of its concepts are still highly controversial; nevertheless, a comprehensive book covering the area will be welcome to readers interested in the logical foundation of inferences in sampling from finite populations. The book is extremely well written and at the same time mathematically rigorous. If a criticism may be made about its technical content, it concerns the ambiguity of certain of the philosophical concepts. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
