Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(1), 67–68. Reviews the book, The Community Training Center: An Educational-Behavioral-Social Systems Model for Rehabilitating Psychiatric Patients by Michael D. Spiegler and Haig Agigian (see record 1979-29290-000). The authors clearly succeed in their goal to provide a practical guide to implementing programs for rehabilitating the socially marginal person. The book is a detailed step-by-step report of how the program was implemented in the Day Treatment Center at the Palo Alto VA Hospital. Numerous concrete examples are presented. A special strength is the inclusion in the text and in two appendices of printed materials used at the Center. Providing this material is a very concrete model to readers establishing their own program and is certainly consistent with the approach of the authors. There is a good balance between stating the theoretical rationale and presenting the nuts and bolts of the program. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
