Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(1), 78. Reviews the book, Sozialformen des Lernens: Einzel-und Kleingruppenarbeit im Unterricht by Bernd Jotten (1977). This book deals with the value of small-group work in higher education. About three-fifths of the book gives the theoretical background and review of the literature; the other two-fifths gives the account of a field experiment. The subjects were divided into three treatment groups individual work throughout, group work throughout, and individual work in the early information transmission phase and group work during the second phase, in which the students were to prepare a compensatory education program. Despite the weak confirmation of the theory, the author pleads for continuation of the group work, as it seems to do no harm, may do some good, and certainly makes students feel better.
