Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1979, Vol 24(1), 80. Reviews the book, Behavioral-social aspects of contraceptive sterilization edited by Sidney H. Newman and Zanvel E. Klein (1978). This volume represents the joint efforts of experts in several disciplines concerned with sterilization; the papers were updated for publication. All these chapters review positive and negative evidence about the import of sterilization and discuss the authors' own work, some of which is still in progress. Among the problems are the lack of comparability between studies and between test and control groups, the importance of very long-range effects, and the lack of measurement techniques. However, this volume gives an excellent summary of current knowledge and current work in the field. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
